The Cum Laude Music Awards named Oliver a 2021 Winner, recognizing In the Direction of Dreams in the category of Best Clarinet Trio. The prize includes a CD recording, performances in Spain and a broadcast on Spanish Radio Television.
Oliver composed In the Direction of Dreams in 2018 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the United States Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. The music unfolds in three movements, inspired by one of his favorite walks alongside Walden Pond, through Adams Woods, and down to Fairhaven Bay on the Sudbury River. This sojourn traverses the historic setting of Thoreau’s Life in the Woods, a landscape of idyllic swimming holes, pine forests, stone walls, and a shimmering river. This serenely beautiful landscape has continued to be a source of inspiration and reflection for generations of community members thanks to its protected status.
