The North/South Consonance Chamber Orchestra will perform the New York premiere of Oliver’s sextet Love Letters (flute, clarinet, string quartet). Love Letters was written in 2015 for the composer’s marriage to Landscape Architect Chris Beagan. “This piece is an affirmation of love and equality,” Oliver shares, and this performance takes place on the eve of their third anniversary. “Chris and I grew up in a time when two men could not marry. When we tied the knot, our marriage was only recognized in some parts of our country.” Three weeks after their wedding, the Supreme Court issued the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, which recognized the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry.
The program also includes music by Alejandro Basulto, Ofer Ben-Amots, Roberto Coelho de Souza and North/South Consonance’s own Artistic Director Max Lifchitz.
